Red clover is one of the world's oldest agricultural crops traditionally grown in Europe and the Far East, and more recently in America, as a medicinal herb for a variety of purposes and as a human food providing a source of protein.
Red Clover Isoflavones
Red clover (trifolium pratense) is a legume or pulse commonly seen growing in the fields and hedgerows across the UK. Other examples of legumes include chickpeas, lentils and soybeans. Red clover is known to be a rich source of natural isoflavones, containing all four types: genistein, daidzein, formononetin and biochanin (as opposed to soya, which only contains two).
Not all red clover products are the same. In a recent survey, 70% of UK isoflavone supplements contained less than the required 40 mg minimum effective level of isoflavones. (Determination of phytoestrogens in dietary supplements by LC-MS/MS. Clarke DB et al. Food Add Contam 2008;25(5):534-547)
Promensil extracts isoflavones from whole red clover plants harvested just before they blossom. The standardisation process used in the manufacture of Promensil ensures that each tablet in every pack supplies 40mg of isoflavones â€“ the level that is consumed in a typical legume based diet eaten in Asia or Japan, for example.
Red clover used in Promensil, from which the extract is taken, is cultivated and harvested in respect of GAP (Good Agricultural Practices), ensuring full process traceability. The harvest-time coincides with the balsamic period of the plant and has been established over the years through close collaboration and partnerships between the factory that produces the extract and each farm.
Each batch coming from the plantations is identified by validated HPLC and TLC procedures that determine the total content of the ingredients and detect any contaminants present in accordance with the current standards.
Tablets are produced in a European facility under full GMP/GAP conditions.
